Her Xue-Sheng defines his work as ‘Tu Feng’, folk custom.  As a result his works are largely images from the Southern Ningxia Mountains.  He uses surrealistic methods in painting to create a surreal yet mysterious atmospheres juxtaposed to a true-to-life image of everyday life.

Born in western China Her Xue-Sheng belonged to one of the country's ethnic minorities, a mountain people with an ancient religious, symbolic language and many fantastic customs, this is the basis of his inspiration as an artist. Almost everything painted takes inspiration from his people's history and culture.  A minority, which has fought against the Mongols and been forced to suffer many hardships in the mountain environment of Asia.  Ironically it is from these hardships that Xue-Sheng pulls strength and inspiration for his paintings.
