"As an artist, my thinking process is naturally manifested in my
art work. I would
say the physical and emotional experience of
immigration has offered
me an excellent opportunity to compare
and differentiate the
cultural values from the east and west.
This guides my primary
conceptual interest in, and concern for,
the immigrant
experience". ---- Li Tie
Li Tie was born in Beijing in 1964, coincident with the
beginning of the Cultural Revolution. Early in his life he demonstrated a
talent for drawing and at the age of fourteen he was accepted for art study at
the Children's Palace in Beijing. He later worked and studied at the
prestigious Central Academy of Fine Art in Beijing. In 1987, the artist
immigrated to the U. S. and since that time has split his time between China and
his newly adopted country. He completed a Master of Fine Arts degree at
San Diego State University where he is currently teaching.
The super realistic charcoal and pastel portraits of
Tibetan and South East Asian minority subjects by Li Tie have been shown at the
White Lotus Gallery over the last few years and have won the praise of numerous
patrons at solo exhibitions in both the U. S. and China. This show
includes a selection of new portraits that seem so lifelike one almost expects
them to speak. But photo realism is not the only style of this talented
young artist. He incorporates his superior drawing skills to create
another body of work which has been alternately celebrated and banned in his
native China. It is this work that explores differences, both in time and
in cultures.
