Description

This scroll is in reference to the painting of the same title by Chinese painter Ma Yuan (馬遠). It was painted at Hakusasonso (白沙村荘).

Ma Yuan’s painting was inspired by the poem River Snow (江雪) by Tang Dynasty poet LIU Zongyuan (柳宗元)–

千山鳥飛絕 In a thousand mountains, the flight of birds is not seen;

萬徑人蹤滅 on ten thousand paths, human footprints have vanished.

孤舟簑笠翁 On a lonely boat, in straw cloak and bamboo hat, an old man,

獨釣寒江雪 fishing alone, in the cold river snow.
